“STILL WATERS RUN DEEP”

by: Norberto Betita

Engr. Nelson G. Martinez

In William Shakespeare’s play, Caesar described Cassius:

Yon Cassius hath a lean and Hungry look.
He thinks too much. Such men are dangerous. (Julius Caesar 1.2.195-6).

These lines were previously related to the Latin proverb “Still waters run deep” which was accepted to mean that silent people are dangerous.

However, as I thought of writing the story of SNNHS ‘69er NELSON G. MARTINEZ, I take the proverb to mean that a silent and quiet person has a lot of deeply hidden visions, intuitions and ideas that flow just as fast as the brainwaves that babbles from the popularity of brilliant minds. This kind of a person exchanges no abundant words, not a chitchat but deep inside him are hidden loads of intelligence and wisdom just finding time to be exposed. This is a person who stands by in humble silence while others squeal and scream.

Nelson is that bashful and self-conscious kid we knew. Although he is popular by the brands that he wears and the attraction that is exposed by him standing even taller than the good height that he possesses, he is that young man whose silence is continuously hiding his person beyond imagination. He dressed perfectly attractive that we used to call him the Golden Award (a popular brand of our time) model. His high school popularity then was purely limited to the beauty and attractiveness of his person. Little did we know that inherent in him was a mind full of imaginations outlining future plans of personal success. Of him I found the person of “the bashful kid who speak no piece unless he comes to fright” in a poem of an unknown author, “Where are the playmates of yesterday.”

As the SNNHS ‘69ers disembarked high school and spread in different routes to their intended journeys, so little was known of Nelson among most of our contemporaries, except perhaps to those who are schooled in the same metropolitan area where Nelson lives. Yet in accord with his long elusive plans of success, he silently and quietly followed the path of his journey and crossed the deep waters of life. Still waters are difficult to cross. One should have the integral capacity to swim the challenges of heights, depths, undercurrent and length to reach the shorelines. But cross he did and landed delightfully to the blissful shore. After a long and depressing toil in college, he eventually graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from the FEATI University.

He worked for experience and took the board exams and successfully passed. Electrical Engineering is a difficult career that it requires a series of board examinations. He hurdled them all and so later became a Professional Electrical Engineer. He’s probably been through continued career growth and progress that eventually brought him to the level and earned for him the high title of an Electrical Engineering Consultant. The once deeply hidden load of intelligence and wisdom is now exposed, “and the bashful kid we knew, is now [an Electrical Engineering Consultant] ten years or more.” (Where are the playmates of yesterday).

The lists of certifications and accomplishments he acquired during his engineering practice included the following:

He was one of those hired as Electrical Engineering Consultant for an Australian company who expressed intentions to buy the Surigao Nickel Refinery, in Nonoc Island, Surigao City. After their actual plant evaluation, he was sent to Australia to prepare the Electrical rehabilitation plans, but for reasons unknown the project was cancelled. To him it was a missed opportunity to return back to his beloved native Province and City the service that should have been of greater help to the Surigaonons.

Perhaps with little or no opportunity that our country could give equivalent to the level of his career, he sought his prospects for greater professional growth and development in the Middle East. He now works with the Dar Al Riyadh Consultants. He was married to Araceli T. Martinez and they now live at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Although he has already reached the age of compulsory retirement, yet his vast experience in Electrical Engineering and Project Management and consultancy are still in demand for utilization for as long as physical health and vigor permits.
